Behavior of Chaotic Magnetic Field Lines in a Periodic System (Tokamak)

The statistical properties of chaotic field lines are analytically studied and numrerically tested from the field line equations. When the chaotic region coexists with magnetic islands, the chaotic field lines follow a diffusion process through the island chains. The corresponding diffusion coefficient is defined as the inverse of the average number of toroidal turns made by the field lines to cross one island chain and it is numerically computed.
