Ion loss Measurements with Scintillator Probes at JET and ASDEX Upgrade

For magnetic fusion devices good confinement of fuel and fusion products is an important scientific goal on the path to a burning fusion reactor. Of particular interest is the direct measurement of fusion products lost from the plasma. Appropriate diagnostics are currently operating at the divertor-tokamaks ASDEX-Upgrade and JET. Both have ITER-like plasma cross-sections and can be used for extrapolations. The basic principle of the probes at both machines is the same: gyrating particles pass a collimator and impact on a scintillating plate when the particle's gyro-radius and pitch-angle meets the design criteria. The scintillation light is recorded by a detection system (CCD camera and/or photomultiplier tube).
