From time to time, fusion researchers are called upon to give a talk about fusion or tokamaks to an audience of non-specialists. The set of transparencies that form this report was made and collected to facilitate that task. Some basic concepts are explained, defined and illustrated. Where examples or illustrations are called for, relevant JET results are presented. The authors are indebted to the JET team researchers and collaborators for information, ideas and material.
