The New Phase of JET: The Pumped Divertor
Thebasicprincipleofthefusionprocessisthefusingoflightnucleitoformheavieronesandtheaccompanyingreleaseofsubstantialenergy.Forafusionreactor,thereareseveralpossiblefusionreactions,buttheonethatiseasiesttoachieveisthatbetweenthedeuteriumandtritiumisotopesofhydrogen.ThisD-Treactionis:D+TÆ4He+n+17.6MeVAtthetemperaturesneededforthisreactiontooccur,theD-Tfuelisintheplasmastate,comprisingamixtureofchargedparticles(nucleiandelectrons),whichcanbecontainedbymagneticfields.Themosteffectivemagneticconfigurationisthetoroidaltokamakdevice,ofwhichtheJointEuropeanTorus(JET)isthelargestinoperation.PreprintofPapertobesubmittedforpublicationinEurophysicsNews
